The Truth. Over one billion children live in poverty.

What are human rights?

Human rights are basic standards and freedoms that every person requires to live. They are founded on respect for the dignity and worth of each individual. Regardless of race, colour, gender, language, religion, opinions, origins, wealth, birth status or ability, these rights apply to every human being, everywhere.

“Human rights are those rights which are essential to live as human beings – basic standards without which people cannot survive and develop in dignity. They are inherent to the human person, inalienable and universal”.

The Convention:

Twenty years ago, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention as they require special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children too have human rights.

The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care, education, and legal, civil and social services. To see the full Declaration Convention on the Rights of a the Child click here.

Children depend on adults in this
world, and require them to defend
these rights. However, the leaders
of the world’s nations have let
children down, and billions around
the world are living lives of indignity.
